The 2025 Family Literacy Week theme is “Learn to Be Green, Together!”

Two Fun Family Activities

Come to the Library Kids’ Section and play:

  • Be Green Family Bingo (pdf) – Try some of these Earth-friendly family activities & see if you can make a row or fill the whole game board! Printouts also available in the library. More information below.
  • Critter Scavenger Hunt in the Library – Find four animals in the children’s section, and discover what they’re doing to help the Earth! Fillable clue sheet available.

Be Green Family Bingo Resources

  1. Regrow green onions or other vegetables from scrap ends (PDF).
  2. Make an upcycled craft using Creativebug.
    • Search “upcycled” and “reuse” in Creativebug, our free crafting video course database for all ages, free with your library card. You’ll find lots of neat crafting projects and themes, like “Make an Upcycled Pouch”, “Make a Bird Costume”, and “Sustainable Play”
    • Or alternatively, make origami with recycled paper: check out origami books at the library.
  3. Visit the Library, borrow books. See our open hours, and how to get a library card.
  4. Make up a story about a wondrous green future. Make it up out loud, write it down, or draw a comic or picture together. 
  5. Count different nature sounds on a walk.
  6. Learn the chorus to Big Beautiful Planet by Raffi.
  7. Borrow a bird-watching kit from the Library.
  8. Sort & count your recycling (PDF).
  9. Read an Indigenous story.
  10. Play “I spy” garbage pickup.
  11. Follow a vegan / plant-based recipe from a cookbook. Or try one of these Meat-Free Monday recipes.
  12. Ask at the Knick Knack Nook about how they help the planet.
  13. Borrow a telescope from the Library.
  14. Make land art with natural items you find on a walk.
  15. Track the weather for a week (PDF).
  16. What are 3 ways you can reduce waste & consumption? Get started with some ideas from National Geographic Kids.
